Emma Brignall Ostler was a timber and land pioneer in the Levin area as well as an advocate for women’s rights particularly education and suffrage. In 1879 Emma’s husband William had a fatal accident which would cause Emma mother of three to loose everything except 1000 pounds from Williams life insurance which allowed Emma to pay for her children’s education. Almost a decade later in 1888 an opportunity to obtain land took Emma and her daughter to Levin, they were the among the first settlers who would go on to clear the bush and build Cashmere estate. Emma was also known for her many profitable land deals which was all quite remarkable for the time.
