Hugh Segar was an early settler to New Zealand in 1894 arriving for a position as chair of mathematics at Auckland University which he earned by his strong background at at Trinity College and University of Wales. In Auckland Hugh’s involvement with academia and the community is extensive with 12 papers at New Zealand Institute and contributing to many articles for institutions such as the New Zealand Herald. Hugh also served on many boards including member of the Auckland university College Council from 1913 to 1929, president of the New Zealand institute 1931 to 1933 and even more humble and local boards as Auckland Grammar School board, Dilworth Trust board and the Auckland city council library committee additionally Hugh gave his time to the community via public lectures.
Hugh was from an Anglican background which he gave back too as governor of St Johns College from 1908 to 1910. Described as a reserved but kind man describes his 40 years of service teaching mathematics at honours level but doesn’t capture his sporting accomplishment’s in the community as vice president of the Auckland Rugby Football Union and as President of the Auckland University College Football club.
