Auckland born Holt was a pioneer New Zealand surveyor and civil engineer. As the designer of the cemetery’s grounds and the architect of the original chapel, he is a figure of particular importance for Purewa.
Holt lived in Papakura, and was a pillar of the community. As a member of Christ Church, he served as the vicar’s warden and treasurer. He also supervised the erection of the Memorial Sanctuary, and is believed to be the designer of the building. (Interior pictured here).
“During his… nearly quarter of a century stay in Papakura, Mr Holt has done a good deal more than any other individual… by precept and by practical demonstration, of the value of doing things oneself to help the place move forward.” – Obituary in the Franklin Times, 15/06/1928, XVII, 67
Percy was laid to rest in Purewa after dying from a heart attack. He joined his Mother, Elizabeth Holt, in rest.
