Richard Atkinson Abbot was an architect best known for his design of the obelisk on One Tree Hill in 1941.

After studying at King’s College in Remuera, Richard began his architectural career with C. Le N. Arnold. There, he absorbed the firms noted American influences. Later he trained in Yorkshire, England, and then went on to study at the Sorbonne in Paris. Returning to New Zealand, Richard had the opportunity to visit San Francisco where he was undoubtedly influenced by the region’s Spanish-influenced designs.

Some notable highlights from Richard’s career include the new construction of Auckland Grammar School and also King’s College after its move to Middlemore.

Abbott was a founding member of the New Zealand Institute of Architects
