Died 1901

Sarah known as Sophia was born in London and had significant teaching experience before coming to New Zealand in 1860 with the Church Mission Society.

Initially she taught at a mission post in the Waikato but she returned to Auckland to advocate for education for girls, which at that time wasn’t considered essential. She campaigned for a state secondary school for girls in Auckland, and in 1877, was the first Principal of the Auckland Girls’ Training and High School, later Auckland Girls’ Grammar School. Lack of resources led to her resignation a year later and she returned to private teaching in Nelson and Napier. An active supporter of the Anglican Church she died in Auckland. Sarah Sophia Stothard 1826-1901 is buried in Block A, Row 1, Plot 053.
