Walter Monton Carrollo was a early settler to Auckland who taught gymnastics across all sectors of society. His first classes were in high street but soon moved to larger rooms in the Mercantile Chambers to meet increasing demand. Some time afterwards he took over the Y.M.C.A. Rooms, and conducted them for many years. He was, besides this, instructor to most of private and secondary schools around Auckland, including but not limited to; Auckland Grammar School, the Parnell Native School, Costley Training institute for boys and the Blind Institute and it was in that connection that he showed his ability and connection to the community. Walter had splendid control over his pupils, and he brought them along in physical ability famously. There are many who will remember the Professor through the enduring strength of frame he gave them. He became immensely popular with all classes of the community through his devotion to his work.
