Historical Burial Grounds

Telling the story of Auckland’s history

The historical burial grounds date to when the cemetery first opened in 1889. This area occupies the higher grounds of the cemetery, where many of Auckland’s earliest notable citizens are buried. If you prefer a historical setting, there are still some plots available in these picturesque areas. We would be delighted to assist you – please contact us for more information.

PRE PURCHASE OF BURIAL PLOTS NOW RESTRICTED

The Purewa Cemetery Trust Board has suspended the pre purchase of burial plots except for imminent or immediate use, or families who already have close family buried here (a spouse, child, parent or sibling).

Purewa General Manager, Alastair Crombie, says the move was necessary to ensure the availability of plots into the future. “Like many other cemeteries in Auckland, Purewa is facing the pressures of an expanding population which places strain on available land for burials. To ensure we have sufficient plots for some years to come, the Board has decided to only allow pre purchase for immediate need, or to families who already have a close family member buried at Purewa,” he said.

On current demand Purewa expects to be able to provide burial plots for about another 25 years. Although cremated remains now accounts for between 75 and 85 per cent of all interments in New Zealand, full body burial is still popular with many people.
