Howard Coverdale was a distinguished ophthalmologist who served in World War I in the Royal Flying Corp and as a medical officer in World War II. He was New Zealand’s foremost ophthalmic surgeon, a member of the International Editorial Board of the American Quarterly Review of Ophthalmology and the author of numerous important papers.

In his youth, Howard became head-prefect at his school and after graduation learned to fly, joining the R.A.F. in England in I9I8.

After the war he studied at Cambridge University where he was president of the Medical Society.

On the outbreak of World War II he enlisted in the army where he was responsible for most of the ophthalmology in the New Zealand Division and allied forces in the North African and Italian campaigns.
