William Pratney (born Wiremu Paratene on 20th of May 1909) was an inspirational professional cyclist who won various competitions including; New Zealand 100 mile Road Championships (1937), 217 km Waimate to Christchurch race (1950), 160 km Timaru to Christchurch race (1955) and more. William even completed a 330 km ride in Australia aged 86 years. Known for his stamina, In 1954, he rode in a six day non-stop tour on a track built inside Carlaw Park at one stage riding for 12 hours straight after his team-mate pulled out injured.
Pratney severed on the Manurewa Borough Council and was an inaugural member of the Manukau City Council who ran on a Christian platform.
